The Vahua community in Isabel Province is on high alert as the search continues for 38-year-old Sam Dao, who has been missing for a month, since Sunday, December 14.
Sam, described as short in stature with black hair that is beginning to bald, is also known to have mental health challenges.
He was last seen leaving the Vahua settlement in a dugout canoe, heading in the direction of Vasole.
According to family members, Sam paddled towards Sigana village on Sigana Island before heading north. His mother, Cecilia Pei, attempted to follow him in a smaller canoe but was forced to turn back due to safety concerns.
“I was worried for him, but my canoe was too small to continue,” Cecilia shared. “I just wanted to make sure he was safe.”
As night fell on Sunday, Sam had not returned home, prompting Cecilia to alert the community. A search party was organized, but as of Monday afternoon, there have been no signs of Sam.
His uncle, Santas, went to the Tatamba Police Station to report him missing on December 16th.
“The police officers, however, told him to call back if the search was unsuccessful. I donโt understand why they didnโt take immediate action,” Cecilia explained.
The family is growing increasingly concerned as the hours pass without any news.
“We really want our son back and safe,” Cecilia added.
Cecilia has reached out to local authorities and is appealing for assistance from the public.
As the search continues, the community of Vahua remains hopeful for Sam’s safe return. Family members however, urging anyone with information to come forward or contact them at (677) 7103558 to assist in the search efforts.
